When Josephine Horton learned that her son Daunte had received a spot in the kindergarten class at Urban Choice Charter School two years ago, she said she cried tears of joy. “I really felt like we had won the lottery.”
Parents choose charter schools for a variety of reasons. Urban Choice typically has 150 students enter its lottery for fewer than 40 kindergarten spots. Principal John Bliss said that safety is the main reason parents seek his school, followed by the school’s small size and communication with parents. Horton said that she chose a charter school for her son because she was concerned about problems that many Rochester district schools experience. “I believe they mean well but I don’t think the structure and guidance is there anymore,” she said. Urban Choice has an extended day program that lasts from 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday school on eight Saturdays a year. It is accepting applications through February 28. - Charter School Goes for Whatever Works
